As January comes to a close it is a fantastic time to get organized. It feels so good to have your home organized everything with a place and the biggest challenge, everything in its place. There are certain problem areas I find in a home and it is usually what lies behind closed doors, the pantry, closets and cabinets. Make a deal with yourself to tackle one door each day until you’ve made your way through the whole house, that way you won’t feel to overwhelmed by the process. Set up 3 large garbage bags, one for trash, one for recyclables and one for donations and add to the bags as you go through each area. Deal with the pantry by grouping, grains together, cereals and can goods, I like to keep vegetables together making a row for each variety, turn the labels in one direction for a really clean look and take the time to label each shelf to maintain order. The medicine cabinet can also get cluttered through the year so take the time to inspect the dates on medications discarding anything that is past its prime. For prescription medications, be sure to take to your local pharmacy so they can destroy them properly. Clothing closets represent their own challenges; consider taking a trip to the local organizing store to purchase shelving and storage options such as belt racks and hanging shoe bags. It is amazing how open even a small closet can feel when you get the floor cleared. To address clothing, start by making sure everything is hung to face the same direction, next group clothing by sleeve length so the front of the closet would start with tanks followed by short sleeves then long. Within each sleeve length, group by color starting with white and working to black. It is amazing how these simple steps will save you time and make getting dressed a breeze! Take a little time to clear the clutter in your home today; you’ll be glad you did!
