A Poverty Experience Challenge with Community Lifeline Center

Sep 19, 2013 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Community Lifeline Center is pleased to announce that we are bringing poverty to McKinney – meaning that we are hosting, for the first time, an immersive poverty simulation workshop, presented by a trained facilitator and designed to educate and inspire the community. This event will take place Thursday, September 19, at First United Methodist Church, 6:30-9:00 P.M. (Check-in begins at 6:00. Participants must be pre-registered and pre-paid via the CLC website). Attendance is limited to 100 participants, ages 14+. This is a great opportunity for mission, youth or bible study groups, community and civic leaders, work teams from corporations and small businesses alike.
During a simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families, from single parents trying to care for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their self-sufficiency on Social Security. The task of each family is to provide food, shelter and other basic necessities during the activity, while interacting with various community resources.
Although it uses "play" money and other props, fictional scenarios, and time limits, this activity is not a game. It is a simulation tool that enables participants to view poverty from different angles in an experiential setting. Simulations take approximately 3 hours to run, including an orientation, and a debriefing period.
Cost: $25 per person
Family Rate: $100 for 5 or more members, ages 14+
