Blood Donors Provide Local and Worldwide Help – March 18
March 5, 2014 — Blood donors at Mercy Health’s blood drive will impact lives in our area as well as internationally. Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) will make a financial contribution to Global Blood Fund for each person who donates Tuesday, March 18, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The drive will be held in the Mercy Health Community Room.
“Instead of donors receiving an appreciation item, they have the chance to ‘doubly’ give,” said John Armitage, M.D., OBI president and CEO. “They will save lives of those in our area hospitals, and also make a difference for blood centers lacking even the basics.”
Global Blood Fund is a nonprofit that supports struggling blood centers abroad. Equipment and supplies, often unavailable in certain countries, are provided through the charity. To date, blood centers in Mexico, Haiti, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Georgia, Armenia and Japan have been able to elevate their services to local patients through voluntary blood donors.
Those who are healthy and 16 years* or older can typically donate. All donors receive free health screenings and Donor Rewards Points, redeemable online for gift cards and merchandise.
Providing every drop of blood needed by patients in 140 medical facilities across the state, Oklahoma Blood Institute is the ninth largest, non-profit blood center in America. For more information or to make an appointment, call 877-340-8777 or visit obi.org.
