Treasures Await Madill Blood Donors – April 22
April 7, 2014 - Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) urges all healthy adults to donate blood at the April 22 blood drive at Oklahoma Steel and Wire, Madill. Each donor at Tuesday’s blood drive, from 7:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will be treated to an appreciation item from OBI’s ‘treasure chest’.
“Treasured is an appropriate word to describe the appreciation we hear from folks who have needed blood,” said John Armitage M.D., CEO and president of OBI. “Our donors’ life-saving gifts mean the world to those battling for their lives.”
One in every seven people entering a hospital will need blood. However, of those eligible to donate blood in the U.S., only about ten percent actually do. Giving blood takes about an hour, and each donation can save as many as three different lives. Donations can be made every 56 days.
Although all blood types are needed, those with O-negative type blood are especially encouraged to donate. Only nine percent of the population has O-negative blood, yet it can be used by persons with all blood types. This makes it particularly critical in trauma situations when time doesn’t allow for identification of a patient’s blood type.
Those 16 and older* can typically donate. Walk-ins are welcomed, but appointments are available by calling 877-340-8777 or visiting www.obi.org.
* 16 year olds must weigh at least 125 and provide signed parental permission; 17 year olds must weigh at least 125 pounds; 18+ year olds must weigh at least 110 pounds
