With temperatures plunging towards freezing, it is a great time to give your house the once over to be sure you are keeping your utility bills as low as possible. It is hard to estimate exactly how much you can save but every little bit adds up in the long run. Make a round inside your house to be sure all of your windows are closed and latched. Check out your doors to be sure gaskets are in place and not leaking cold air into your home. Turn your heat way back when you leave the house in the morning, the saving will really add up. Close off any rooms that are not used on a daily basis by shutting the air vents and doors. Have a family meeting to remind everyone to turn the lights off as you leave the room and to turn off stereos and TV’s when they are not in use. It is also a good idea to power off computers, they use a lot of energy even when they are in power saving mode. In fact it is a good idea to unplug any appliances that are not in use like toasters and coffee pots and charging cables; they leach power even when they are not in use. Conserve hot water for double duty savings by simply shortening showers, and only washing clothes and dishes when you have a full load.
